In 2003 a grass–roots effort emerged to begin to formulate standardized quality control measures for real-time oceanographic data. Six meetings were convened over the next nine years, and QC manuals for wave and current observations were drafted. By 2012 it was clear that the work was highly valued, but in need of a more formal standing. The U.S. IOOS® adopted the QARTOD project, and all published manuals are available on the QARTOD Project page.
